SQL is a database developed by Microsoft, while HANA is a database developed by SAP. This means that new changes by SAP will be deployed in HANA only.

Firstly, database technology. SQL is based on disk storage technology, while HANA is on in-memory technology. With HANA’s in-memory database, you will gain faster access to the information you need, as your data is stored directly on RAM. On the other hand, SQL takes longer to process as the database is stored on a hard disk.

Secondly, reporting. In the MS SQL version, reporting is done through Crystal Reports or Jet. HANA is its own reporting medium, with more than 60 dashboards and KPIs already pre-packaged. HANA’s Excel-based Interactive Analytics lets users slice and dice their business data; change grouping/pivot table/sorting sequence on-the-fly. HANA is not just a reporting tool but is a platform that supports functions requiring high processing power like forecasting, MRP, scheduling, and many more.

Thirdly, operating system. Microsoft SQL Server runs on Windows Server, SAP Hana run on SuSe Linux Enterprise Server.

Firstly, location. The fundamental difference between on-premise and cloud software is where it resides. On-premise hosting is installed physically on your business’s computers and servers, while the cloud hosting is on a third-party service provider.

Secondly, costs. Cloud hosting would be a more affordable option as there are no upfront hardware or software license costs. Instead, you rent the hardware, paying a smaller amount monthly. In contrast, you are required to purchase your server licenses upfront, which is typically costly.

Thirdly, control and security. On-premise hosting provides you with direct control and access to your data, allowing flexibility in local reporting accesses. On the other hand, cloud hosting is a secure browser-based access from anywhere, at any time.
